Shanklin Theatre ‘Coast to Country Walks’

On Monday 6th May, the Friends of Shanklin Theatre completed the first of two ‘Coast to Country Walks’ as part of the Isle of Wight Walking Festival 4th-19th May 2019.

There are around 100 walks to choose from across the two week period – from short to long, flat to hilly, beaches to forests and everything in between, with over 50% of walks being new this year.

Our Membership Secretary; Jacqui Robertson decided that it was time to include Shanklin Theatre on the Walking Festival calendar for 2019.

After considerable hard work and extensive research by Jacqui, the new ‘Shanklin Coast to Country’ walk was born and scheduled to take place today and on the 19th May.

Both the walks are narrated at specific points to highlight volunteer work and key historic facts. Starting at Shanklin Railway Station then heading towards Shanklin Esplanade and ending at Sibden Hill Nature Reserve. Brief historic talks were given to 37 walkers and a lovely black Labrador! Two of our guest walkers were from Ontario Canada.

A refreshment stop also took place at Shanklin Theatre where a brief talk was given about its history by Rob Robertson. Homemade cakes, hot and soft drinks were provided for all taking part in the inaugural Shanklin walk raising over £88.00 in donations from very satisfied walkers.

I hope you can join us on our next scheduled walk for the 19th May. More details here:…/shanklin-coast-…/

Our thanks go to all our volunteers and walkers who made today a great success, thank you! Jacqui Robertson, Robert Robertson, Heather Whitchurch, Maureen Jones, Gillian and Colin Maskell.

Special thanks to Annie O’Neill and the catering team for the lovely homemade cake, tea & coffee.
