Shanklin Theatre provides a great home for First Act Theatre Group (a theatre group for people with learning disabilities). We have use of the bar area and the stage (when it is free) to rehearse our shows, which we present twice a year, at the Theatre. The staff (who are mainly volunteers) are so helpful and supportive of the work we do.
During the past year we have performed to the Earl and Countess of Wessex when they visited the Theatre, presented a Spring show ‘The History of Shanklin Theatre According to First Act’ (as part of the 80 year celebrations of the Theatre), celebrated First Act’s 20th Anniversary, run Summer workshops in theatrical skills, produced two Christmas shows – ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and the following day a modern day nativity ‘A Special Gift’. To have shows on consecutive days was quite a challenge for the production team and those members of the company who performed in both shows, but they managed and came up with two wonderful productions!
The production team is now busy working on our next show which will be presented in the Spring – we start rehearsing on the 5th January.
All this would not be possible without SHANKLIN THEATRE & THE STAFF.
All of us at First Act feel very lucky to have such an amazing venue to work in.

We have received this lovely message from Cllr Ian Ward Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council.
“Tonight, Connie and I attended a Pantomime show put on by the “First Act” group at Shanklin Theatre. The Panto was Sleeping Beauty. It was just great. We went backstage to meet the performers and their mentors. Just some lovely people”.
