Rejuvenated SHANKLIN THEATRE Sign
Some may have noticed that the illuminated theatre sign above the main entrance has been looking a little dull of late. This was due to all but one of the internal fluorescent tubes having failed.
Due to the poor condition of the sign electrics and difficulty of access to the sign, it was decided to rejuvenate the sign by installing the latest high efficiency technology Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting as a replacement for the fluorescent tubes.
The tiny LEDS were attached to panels and dropped into place at the rear of the sign, with a total of 3600 LEDs providing illumination.
In addition to long lifetime (meaning reduced maintenance costs), LEDs consume little electricity – the LED sign requires only 25% of the electricity of the fluorescent tubes.
The running cost of the complete LED sign is very low at 2p per hour, helping to improve the theatre’s green footprint as the sign is illuminated for hundreds of hours each year.

Our sincere thanks go to one of our valued Volunteers, Robert Robertson, who took on this project and initially investigated the best ways of access to the sign for repair and future maintenance. He sourced the best way to achieve an excellent light plus the parts to do the job and included in his deliberations the most cost effective result for the Theatre in keeping it running.
We greatly appreciate Robert’s diligence and we are so pleased he has been rewarded with such a wonderful outcome.
