No change to chargeable hours – IOW Council agrees to “do the right thing”
At the Isle of Wight Council Executive Meeting held on 7th July 2014 the option on the list of proposed changes in the Parking Order for the extension of charging between 6.00pm to 8.00pm was not voted through. Not a single member was prepared to propose the motion or second it, so the motion fell.
Cllr Gilbey told members this item had the biggest input from individual representations across the Island:
“Voluntary organisations, after-school clubs, people coming home from work that normally park in car parks after 6.00pm, affecting every single area of the Island and impacting the local economy.
“It has quite out-stretching consequences.”
Cllr Priest said:
“We need to be mindful of the evening economy, this is the area of most concern across the Island. It reflects the fact that we do listen to Islanders and have listened sensibly to the Island economy and this is one of those areas that we have to do the right thing.”
Quote from Chris Quirk, Shanklin Theatre & Community Trust Chairman:
“The change of heart on not implementing an extension to the period of paid parking until 8.00 pm was a response to the number and quality of the letters opposing the changes made as part of the Parking Places Order consultation.
Thank you to all of our supporters who took the time and made the effort to submit a comment to the consultation.
Well done everyone, and thank you to the Executive for listening to sound counsel”.
